In its place is a convoluted process that requires launching System Preferences and clicking buttons. But some years back, this feature vanished, never (at least so far) to be seen again. In prior versions of the Mac OS, switching resolutions wasn’t a big deal-an optional menu bar icon provided quick access to any available resolution. As a result, I found myself constantly switching resolutions-I’d use a higher resolution when working on complicated projects, then switch back to the default retina resolution when browsing the web or reading email. Like many of our other apps, Resolutionator came about due to an internal need-I use a 13″ retina MacBook Pro, and as crisp and gorgeous as that 1280×800 ‘retinaized’ display is, that’s just not a lot of room when working with lots of windows. Resolutionator makes it brain-dead-simple to switch the resolution on your display(s), and was developed with retina displays in mind (though it’s perfectly functional on non-retina displays, too). Not sure what other apps can do better.Meet Resolutionator, the newest entry in Many Tricks’ stable of apps. You can even put my laptop monitor at full 3360 * 2100.Īnyway, great app, and best of all free. With this app, you can get access to all possible resolutions of your monitor including the 5120 * 2880 (I settled for the one level down 4096 * 2304, as the full 5k is a little bit too small for me on a 27” monitor). After installing this app, it became obvious that nothing was wrong with the monitor or macbook, but more that Apple decided to not offer over 3200x1800 res for those monitors (offering only the “retina” options). Spent 1:30 hour with apple customer support, they did not know why, went to the store, tested with their LG5k monitor and they could not understand why I could not get the full 5120 * 2880. I just bought the LG5k for my MBP 15” touchbar, but could not get higher than 3200x1800 from the default system display pref. This app is just pefect for what it does. Great simple app to get resolution you can’t normally get
